Emergency call box system over optical fiber

The emergency call system over optical fiber transmission allows voice and control data communications between the roadside emergency call boxes and the Control Center where the emegency calls are received and the whole system is managed. Musatel offers solutions for different types of configurations, depending on the transport network between the emergency call boxes set and the Control Center.

Configuration 1: transport network is SDH.

Emergency call box system over optical fiber SDH transport network

Transport of voice and data between the optical header equipment and the Control Center is made over SDH. The equipments involved in this configuration are:
Roadside:
• A set of call boxes distributed along a road or tunnel.
Optical header equipment (ECL) to which the call boxes are connected. This equipment adapts the optical-electrical interfaces and also performs automatic calibration of the optical power transmitted by the call boxes.

Located at the Control Center:
• Communication front-end interface (FEI RS232 and audio)
• Management software for emergency call attention and supervision handled by an operator.

Configuration 2: transport network is IP

Emergency call box system over optical fiber with IP transport network

In this configuration the Optical Front End Interface(FEI) IP acts as a optical header equipment that is directly connected to the optical fiber of the emergency call boxes in one side and to the Control Center in the other side (over an IP transport network). Voice and data transport between FEI and Control Center is done over an IP network using standard protocols TCP/IP, UDP/IP y voice over IP. Control Center software for this configuration is Musatel SOS. Allocation of the Control Center that handles the emergency call network is done dinamically by means of a message sent to the FEI from the Control Center software.
The equipments involved in this configuration are:
Roadside:
• A set of call boxes distributed along a road or tunnel.
Optical FEI IP equipment.
Located at the Control Center:
• Musatel SOS Management Software for emergency call attention and supervision handled by an operator.

Configuration 3: IP transport network, Control Center software does not handle IP header

The adapter equipment that must be installed in the Control Center provides RS232 connection and audio managed by a conventional FEI.
The equipments involved in this configuration are:
Roadside:
• A set of call boxes distributed along a road or tunnel.
Optical FEI IP equipment.
Located at the Control Center:
Optical FEI IP-CC converter.
• Management software for emergency call attention and supervision handled by an operator.

Configuration 4: Optical header equipment is located at the Control Center

Emergency call box system over optical fiber with optical header located at the Control Center

In this configuration the management of the emergency call boxes is performed at the optical header location.
The equipments involved in this configuration are:
Roadside:
• A set of call boxes distributed along a road or tunnel.
Located at the Control Center:
Optical FEI RS232 and audio.
• Management software for emergency call attention and supervision handled by an operator.

Following configuration is used if the optical header is located at the Control Center and the communication between the header equipment and the Emergency call management computer must be done over IP:

The equipments involved in this configuration are:
Roadside:
• A set of call boxes distributed along a road or tunnel.
Located at the Control Center:
Optical FEI IP equipment.
• Musatel SOS Management Software for emergency call attention and supervision handled by an operator.

How to increase the number of call boxes connected to an optical header

The number of call boxes that can be connected to an optical header equipment (ECL) is set by the optical signal attenuation due to fiber coupling losses in each splitter and the optical fiber attenuation. The Optical Repeater equipment regenerates the optical signal so that an increased number of call boxes can be connected to the same optical header.
